Real-life examples of the fruit of the Spirit

It's easier to grow a fruit you can recognise. These everyday examples show what each fruit of the Spirit looks like at home, school and work, including moments where more than one fruit shows up at once.

Examples of love

Love in Galatians 5 is the self-giving kind: choosing someone else's good, even when it costs you. Paul lists it first, and the rest of the fruit grows out of it.

  • Every Thursday, Aisha drives her neighbor to dialysis, even though it takes her whole afternoon. This is love: giving costly time for someone's good. Kindness and faithfulness show up too, because it's practical and every single week.
  • After his brother wrecked his bike, Leo said, "I'm upset, but you matter more than the bike." Putting a person above a possession is love. He's honest about feeling upset, and still chooses his brother.
  • Ella saw a girl crying at the bus stop and sat with her until her mom came. Love notices and stays. Sitting with someone is love even if you can't fix anything.
  • When her husband lost his job, Rosa said, "We're a team. We'll figure this out together." Love stands with someone when they're struggling. Faithfulness and peace are there too, in her steady commitment.
  • Your spouse snaps at you after a difficult day: "Can you just, for once, not leave your stuff everywhere?" What it could sound like: "You're right, sorry. That sounded like more than the mess. Do you want to talk about your day?"

Examples of joy

Joy is a deep gladness rooted in God, not in circumstances. It can sit alongside sadness, because it rests on who God is rather than on how the day is going.

  • Even in the hospital, Mr. Kim thanks every nurse by name and tells jokes. Joy isn't the same as happy circumstances. He finds gladness and shares it even in a hard place.
  • When her best friend made the team and she didn't, Zoe made her a congratulations card. Celebrating someone else's win, especially when it stings, is joy at work. It's also loving and kind.
  • At dinner, Sam's family each says one good thing from their day. Noticing and naming good things is how joy grows. Thankfulness and joy are close friends.
  • Lost the game 5–0. On the bus home, Dev starts singing and the whole team joins in. Joy doesn't depend on winning. Dev chooses gladness and it spreads.
  • It's been a long week. Your child runs up wanting to show you a "magic trick" while you're answering emails. What it could sound like: "A magic trick? Okay, I'm all yours. Show me."

Examples of peace

Peace is wholeness: a settled heart with God that steadies you inside and helps you mend things with others. It isn't the absence of trouble. It's God's presence in it.

  • Before a big exam, Maya writes her worries on paper, prays and goes to bed on time. Handing worries to God and resting is peace. Going to bed on time takes self-control too.
  • When two coworkers started shouting, Juan quietly asked, "Can we each take a minute and then talk?" Peacemaking lowers the temperature. Juan's gentle tone helped make it possible.
  • Two kids wanted the same toy. Lily said, "Let's set a timer and take turns." Finding a fair way for everyone is making peace. It's also good and fair.
  • After a frightening diagnosis, Ruth said, "I'm scared, but I trust God holds me." Peace isn't the absence of fear. It's trusting God in the middle of it.
  • An unexpected bill arrives, bigger than you planned for. Your chest tightens. What it could sound like: "This is stressful. Let me pray, then work out one next step."

Examples of patience

The Greek word literally means 'long-tempered'. It's the ability to bear with people and wait on God without snapping, giving up or rushing ahead.

  • Grandpa asked the same question three times. Each time, Noor answered warmly. Answering again without sighing is patience. Warmth adds kindness and love.
  • Ali's tomato plant took two months to give fruit. He kept watering it every day. Patience waits for slow growth. Faithfulness keeps doing the small things meanwhile.
  • Mia's baby brother knocked over her puzzle. She took a deep breath and started again. Starting again calmly is patience. Taking a deep breath first is self-control.
  • Ten minutes late because his daughter wanted to tie her own shoes, Chen waited and cheered when she did it. Choosing someone's growth over your schedule is patience, and it's loving too.
  • You've asked your child to put on their shoes five times. You're going to be late. What it could sound like: "Hey, look at me. Shoes on before I count to ten? Ready?"

Examples of kindness

Kindness is goodness turned outward in warm, practical care. It sees a need and meets it, often in small and ordinary ways.

  • Jasmine noticed the cleaner at school never got a thank-you, so she left a note and a coffee. Kindness notices people others overlook, and does something practical.
  • When the new kid didn't understand the game, Carlos explained the rules without making him feel silly. Helping without embarrassing someone is kindness. It takes gentleness and patience too.
  • Owen shared his umbrella with a friend who forgot hers. Sharing what you have to help someone is a simple, strong kindness.
  • Hearing her neighbor was sick, Fatima left soup on the doorstep with a note. Practical help when someone is struggling is kindness at its best.
  • Your elderly neighbor's lawn has gotten long. You heard they've been unwell. What it could sound like: "I had the mower out anyway. Let me know if you need anything else."

Examples of goodness

Goodness is integrity in action: doing what's right, and doing good, even when it's costly or no one is watching.

  • The cashier undercharged Ben by $20. He went back and paid it. Doing right when no one would know is goodness. It's honesty in action.
  • When classmates mocked a boy's accent, Sara said, "Not cool," and walked over to him. Goodness stands up for what's right, at a cost. Love and kindness show in walking over to him.
  • Tim found a ring at the park and gave it to the lost-and-found. Returning what isn't yours is goodness.
  • Asked to hide a safety problem, Elena reported it, even though it might cost her the promotion. Integrity when it costs you is goodness. It's faithful to what's true.
  • Your manager asks you to round up some numbers in a report "to make the quarter look better." What it could sound like: "I'm not comfortable changing the numbers, but I can help explain them in the best honest light."

Examples of faithfulness

The World English Bible translates this word as 'faith' in Galatians 5:22, and many translations render it 'faithfulness'. It's trust in God that shows up as reliability: keeping your word, showing up and staying the course.

  • For 40 years, Mr. and Mrs. Osei have had breakfast together every Saturday. Steady, long-term commitment is faithfulness, with love and joy woven through it.
  • Leah promised to help at the food bank. It rained hard, and she still showed up. Keeping your word when it's inconvenient is faithfulness.
  • Jay said he'd water his neighbor's plants all week. He didn't miss a day. Doing every day what you said you'd do is faithfulness.
  • When her friend went through a hard year, Amara texted her every single morning. Being there, consistently, is faithfulness. It's love that doesn't fade.
  • You promised to call your aging father every Sunday. It's 9 p.m. Sunday and you're exhausted. What it could sound like: "Hi Dad, just ten minutes tonight, but I wanted to hear your voice."

Examples of gentleness

Gentleness is strength under control. It's a humble, calm way of dealing with people that doesn't need to crush or win, like Jesus, who called Himself gentle and humble in heart.

  • Instead of correcting his friend in front of everyone, Ethan waited and talked to him privately. Choosing a private, careful way to correct someone is gentleness.
  • A customer yelled at Rina. She answered softly and calmly, and he calmed down. A soft answer turning away anger is gentleness. It takes self-control and brings peace.
  • Ava held the baby bird very carefully and put it back in its nest. Using soft, careful hands is gentleness.
  • Telling an employee their work needed redoing, Maria started with what was good, then explained the fix. Honest correction, delivered with care, is gentleness.
  • Your teenager slams the door after you say no to a sleepover. What it could sound like: "Can I come in? I'm still saying no, but I want to understand why it mattered to you."

Examples of self-control

Self-control is the inner strength to say no to what harms you and yes to what's good. Paul compares it to an athlete's training: it brings freedom, not just restriction.

  • Furious at a text, Kai typed a reply, deleted it, and waited until morning. Waiting instead of reacting in anger is self-control.
  • Even though everyone else was eating dessert, Lin stuck to her plan of one piece. Choosing your plan over the moment's pull is self-control.
  • Max really wanted to open his present early, but he waited until his birthday. Waiting for the right time is self-control, and patience too.
  • Bea saw her ex's post and felt the urge to comment. She put her phone in another room. Putting distance between you and the urge is self-control.
  • A big sale notification pops up for something you want but don't need. Your budget is tight this month. What it could sound like: "I'll wait 30 days. If I still need it then, I'll think again."
