The Fruit of the Spirit, explained simply

In Galatians 5, Paul contrasts two ways of living: by the flesh and by the Spirit. Then he describes what a Spirit-led life produces. He doesn't call them 'fruits' in the plural. He calls them 'the fruit', one harvest with nine flavours.

The verse

Here are the two verses, word for word from the World English Bible:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,

gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:23 (WEB)

Why 'fruit', not 'rules'?

Fruit isn't manufactured. It grows when a tree is healthy and connected to its roots. Jesus used the same picture: a branch only bears fruit while it stays joined to the vine.

That changes how we practise. We don't white-knuckle our way to patience. We stay close to God, and we practise in small, real moments where the Spirit can grow it in us.

I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

The nine, in one line each

  • Love: choosing someone else's good, even when it costs you.
  • Joy: a deep gladness rooted in God, not in circumstances.
  • Peace: a settled heart with God that helps you mend things with others.
  • Patience: being 'long-tempered', bearing with people and waiting on God.
  • Kindness: goodness turned outward in warm, practical care.
  • Goodness: integrity in action, even when no one is watching.
  • Faithfulness: trust in God that shows up as reliability.
  • Gentleness: strength under control, never needing to crush or win.
  • Self-control: the inner strength to say no to what harms and yes to what's good.

How do you actually grow them?

Three things help most. First, honesty: knowing which fruit is thin in your life right now. Second, small daily practice in real situations, not just good intentions. Third, staying close to God in prayer and Scripture, because the Spirit is the one who grows the fruit.

That's how Ninefruit works: a real-life moment each day, the Bible in plain words and one small thing to try, plus a free 2-minute reflection that shows your strongest fruit and the one that's still growing. A five-stage practice plan then helps you grow it with a hands-on tool, practice games and a short private reflection.

FAQ

How many fruits of the Spirit are there?

Nine, listed in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness (the World English Bible says 'faith'), gentleness and self-control. Paul calls them one 'fruit' with nine aspects.

Where is the fruit of the Spirit in the Bible?

Galatians 5:22-23, in Paul's letter to the churches in Galatia.

Is it 'fruit' or 'fruits' of the Spirit?

The Greek word is singular: 'the fruit of the Spirit'. Many people say 'fruits', but Paul describes one harvest with nine qualities that grow together.

Are the fruit of the Spirit the same in Catholic and Protestant Bibles?

Galatians 5:22-23 lists the same nine in Protestant and modern Catholic translations. The Catholic tradition also names twelve fruits, drawn from the Latin Vulgate's longer list, which adds generosity, modesty and chastity.
