What is self-control in the Bible?
Self-control (Greek: enkrateia) is one of the nine fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Self-control is the inner strength to say no to what harms you and yes to what's good. Paul compares it to an athlete's training: it brings freedom, not just restriction.
What self-control looks like
- Pausing before reacting
- Healthy limits on screens, food and spending
- Following through on decisions
Counterfeit: White-knuckle willpower that ends in shame.
Opposite: Impulsiveness, and being ruled by cravings.

3 ways to practise self-control today
- Name the urge: Next time you feel an urge (scrolling, snacking, spending, snapping), name it in Urge Delay.
- Wait it out: Start a 10-minute delay on a real urge and see what happens when it ends.
- Choose on purpose: Complete a delay and make a deliberate choice, whichever way it goes.
In the Ninefruit app, the self-control journey has five stages and its own tool, Urge Delay: Name the urge and start a short delay. When it ends, make a conscious choice instead of an automatic one.
