How to grow the fruit of the Spirit

Fruit can't be forced, but it can be cultivated. Farmers can't make an apple, but they can water, prune and wait. Here's what that looks like for character.

1. Stay connected to the Vine

Everything starts here. Prayer, Scripture and worship aren't extra credit. They're the connection that lets the fruit grow at all.

Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

2. Find out which fruit is thin

Most of us are strong in one or two fruits while another is still growing. An honest look, based on what you actually do in everyday moments, shows where to focus. That's what the free 9 Fruit Test is for.

3. Practise in small, real moments

Patience isn't grown at a conference. It grows in the checkout queue, in traffic and when your kid asks the same question again. Choose one small, specific action a day: 'Let someone finish their sentence three times today.'

Then practise the moment before it happens: imagine a tense situation and decide in advance how love, patience or gentleness would respond.

4. Review honestly, without shame

After a hard moment, write down what happened, which fruit showed up and what you'd do next time. Honest reflection without shame is how practice turns into change. Growth comes in seasons.

Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season if we don’t give up.

FAQ

Can you grow the fruit of the Spirit by yourself?

The Bible says the fruit is produced by the Spirit, not by willpower alone (John 15:5). But Scripture also calls us to practise, to 'walk by the Spirit' (Galatians 5:25), so daily choices matter.

How long does it take to grow a fruit of the Spirit?

It's a lifelong process, but focused practice makes real difference quickly. Focusing on one fruit at a time, with small real practice and honest reflection, helps you notice change sooner.
