Fruit of the Spirit vs gifts of the Spirit
They're often confused, but they answer different questions. The gifts are about what the Spirit does through you. The fruit is about who the Spirit is making you.
The fruit: character for everyone
The fruit of the Spirit is the same nine qualities for every believer. Nobody gets 'joy' instead of 'patience'. The Spirit grows all nine in all of us, over time.

Why the fruit matters more
Right after listing the gifts, Paul writes 1 Corinthians 13, the famous love chapter. His point: gifts without love are empty. Character is the soil the gifts are meant to grow in.

FAQ
What is the difference between the fruit and the gifts of the Spirit?
The fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) is Christlike character every believer grows. The gifts (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12) are abilities given differently to each believer to serve others.
Can you have gifts without fruit?
Paul warns that you can. In 1 Corinthians 13 he says gifts without love amount to nothing, which is why the fruit, especially love, comes first.
What are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit?
In Catholic tradition, drawing on Isaiah 11:2-3, they are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. These are distinct from both the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts in 1 Corinthians 12.
